Description
AFTERSHOCK: A Humanitarian Crisis Game delves into the necessity of interagency collaboration to tackle intricate humanitarian crises. While designed for four players, it can accommodate fewer (even solo play) or more (with players grouped into four teams). Recommended for ages 14 and up.
Set in the fictional nation of “Carana,” the game draws loose inspiration from real disasters like the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Carana grapples with years of tumult, recently striving for national reconciliation and rebuilding amidst poverty, weak governance, and simmering political tensions. Various NGOs and UN agencies, including a UN civilian police contingent, are active in the country.
As the game commences, a devastating earthquake hits Carana’s capital, Galasi, causing extensive damage and leaving tens of thousands in dire need of aid and medical assistance. Military forces from friendly nations, operating as the multinational Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Task Force (HADR-TF), are mobilizing at the request of the Carana government, alongside additional UN and NGO personnel and vital relief supplies.
Time is critical—how many lives can you rescue?
AFTERSHOCK offers a gripping, fast-paced, and immersive experience that players will find both captivating and enlightening. Drawing from real-world events and challenges, it’s also utilized in professional training for aid workers, military personnel, and others engaged in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts.
