This resource is a small-group interactive educational tool inspired by the game “Cranium.” It focuses on outpatient geriatric medicine topics. At the institution where it is used, sessions involve four to six internal medicine residents and last 90 minutes. During this time, residents usually complete most of the 50 cards in the set.
The game starts with a resident choosing a card from the shuffled GER-ANIUM deck. Each card instructs the player to complete a task in one of four categories: drawing or sculpting, answering core knowledge or formula questions, physically demonstrating an answer, or completing a task as a group. Play moves around the table, and a faculty moderator assigns points from 1 to 5 for each answer. At the end, scores are tallied and a winner is announced.
While effectiveness is anecdotal since it is only one 90-minute session during a month-long geriatrics rotation, residents have shared positive feedback like: “This is great! You should sell it. All learning should be like this,” and “That was really fun.”
